Topic: Why I Prefer David To solomon
Text: 1kings 8:1-11
POINTS:
1. Solomon spent 7 years to build God's house and thirteen years to his own house. This is about twice the time (1 kings 6:38, 7:1)
2. Solomon's house was about twice the size of God's house (1Kings11:43, 1 kings 12:1-4)
3. Solomon oppressed the poor (1 kings 11:43, 1kings 12:1-4)
4. Solomon cheated his business associates (1kings 9:10-13)
5. Solomon made political marriage with the heathen ( 1 kings 3:1, 1 kings 11:1-4)
6. Solomon worshipped idols and even brought them into God's house (1 Kings 11:5-8)
7. Solomon inherited blessing from his father David and left curses for his own children 1 kings 11:33-35
8. David wept and repented at God's rebuke, Solomon fought against God's rebuke (2 Samuel 12:13, I kings 11:40)
9. Solomon so greatly decorated the servants that minister in his own house that the queen of Sheba marvelled at it but he never decorated the priests that minister in God's house He did nothing for them (1 kings 10:4-5)
10. Solomon only spoke about God in proverbs and ecclesiastics, but David both spoke with God and about God in psalms and other places Solomon had no deep relationship with God, hence his idolatry.
11. David surrounded himself with God's genuine prophets who often told him bitter truths
- Nathan (2 Sam 12:1-12), but Solomon surrounded himself with idolatrous priests and diviners
12. God always spoke proudly and excitedly about David after his death. ( Rev 5:5), ( Luke 1:31-32), (2 Kings 8:19), (Rev 22:18)- root and offspring of David. But never spoke once about Solomon after his death
